(Orlando, FL)  –  As we celebrate the life and work of actor Chadwick Boseman, who died after a four-year battle with cancer on Aug. 28, the Men’s Ultimate Club at UCF decided to honor him in a creative way.

For the 2018-19 season, the club, known as “Dogs of War,” debuted their Black Panther inspired jersey.

Mike Taylor, club’s head coach and former player, said they wanted something different for the design, but that kept the heart of Dogs of War.

After Boseman’s passing, many current and former members of the ultimate frisbee club and community reached out and suggested that the club re-released the jersey to honor him, said Connor Dowd, president of the Men’s Ultimate Club.

“With everything going on in society today, to have a strong positive black role model is so important and Chadwick was that hero on and off screen,” Dowd said.

To them, Boseman played both real life heroes with Jackie Robinson, who broke baseball’s color barrier in the 1940s, and fictional with T’Challa, the king of Wakanda and main character of “Black Panther.” He also held himself to the highest standards of what it meant to be a good man, they said.

The club announced the re-release of their Black Panther edition jerseys. All proceeds of the sale will go to the Jackie Robinson Foundation, whose goal is to help ensure equal opportunity for black students in higher education.

The club found the close ties Boseman had with the organization after portraying Robinson in the movie “42.” It seemed like a great way to honor him while giving back to support black youth, Dowd said.

“Our club as well as the entire ultimate community is all about equality,” Dowd said.  The fight for equality was part of Boseman’s legacy and the club will continue to celebrate his impact on and off the field.

“The Central Florida Dogs of War are honored to wear the jersey and try to follow in the gigantic footsteps left by a truly remarkable man,” Dowd said.

The club is taking orders until September 21st. To order a Black Panther special edition shirt, please visit this link.
