Orlando, FL (October 26, 2021) – UCF’s Basketball Officiating Class is celebrating another victory with the promotion of two alumni and former UCF Recreation and Wellness Center (RWC) employees, John Conley BS in Sport and Exercise Science ‘13 and MA in Educational Leadership ’15 and Brandon Schwab BSBA in Marketing ’15, to Permanent Staff Officials with the NBA. The addition of Conley and Schwab put the basketball officiating classes at five alumni officiating for the NBA.

Brandon Schwab started his career in 2011 as a UCF Recreation and Wellness Center Intramural Official, officiating flag football and basketball. In 2012, Schwab was hired as an Intramural Supervisor and promoted to a Lead Intramural Supervisor in 2014. He is a two-time NIRSA National Tournament All-American Official for both Basketball (2013 & 2014) and Flag Football (2012 & 2013), and the only UCF student that has earned the All-American recognition four times. During his time at UCF, Schwab began officiating high school football and basketball and was later hired by the Suncoast JUCO Conference for basketball, and the NAIA Sun Conference for football. Schwab completed his first part-time season with the NBA last year (2020-2021) and is now #86 on the 2021-22 NBA Officiating Roster.

“We’re very proud of Brandon and John’s accomplishments in officiating as they have always represented UCF well on and off the court. While they have had incredible success as officials, they’ve also amplified the officiating community by being great leaders and mentors in contributing to the success of others in our program.” -Gary Cahen, Associate Director of the UCF Recreation and Wellness Center and UCF Basketball Officiating Class Alumni

John Conley comes from a family of officials, including his mother Dolores Conley, a Solid Whistles inductee. Before joining the RWC in 2011 as an Intramural Official, Conley had prior experience officiating in local high schools with his family. In 2012, he was named NIRSA National Basketball Tournament All-American Official. During his time at UCF Conley was hired in the Big South, a Division 1 Conference while he worked at the RWC as an Intramural Sports Graduate Assistant. Conley has been officiating for the NBA for two seasons (2019-2020 & 2020-2021) and is now #79 on the 2021-22 NBA Officiating Roster.

Founding member of the UCF Basketball Officiating Class and Executive Director of Recreation and Wellness, Jim Wilkening, says that Conley and Schwab both exemplify the essence of the Basketball Officiating Program.

“Both Brandon and John are shining examples of what can be achieved through hard work, persisting effort, and a strong foundation such as the UCF Basketball Officiating Class”.

The University of Central Florida’s Recreation and Wellness Center is funded by the Student Government. Its continuing mission is to enrich campus life through efficient services, comprehensive programs and high-quality facilities that foster healthy lifestyles.
