The UCF RWC and Parking Services Partner to Provide Group Exercise in Garage B

The UCF RWC and Parking Services Partner to Hold Group Exercise Classes in Garage B

(Orlando, FL) – The UCF Recreation and Wellness Center is collaborating with UCF Parking Services to provide in-person, physically distant opportunities for group exercise classes. Focused on wellness and engagement, this partnership offers many ways for students to get connected with the RWC and maintain their physical and mental health.

The creative idea came from an RWC staff member while walking a campus parking garage during a meeting. The spaces can cater to students who prefer face-to-face group workouts while allowing for proper physical distancing to optimize safety. RWC proposed the idea to Parking Services staff who then made garage B available on certain days and times. It is a unique and innovative partnership and one of the first of its kind in campus recreation.

Assistant Director of Fitness, Kyra Dickie, says giving Knights new well-being opportunities during COVID-19 is dependent on campus partnerships. “Our new outdoor group classes give you the opportunity to challenge yourself, get stronger, but also continue to build the community we know and love at UCF.”

Group exercise classes will be held twice a week on the second floor of Garage B. The times are:

  • Tuesdays 7 a.m. to 7:45 a.m.
  • Thursdays 7 a.m. to 7:45 a.m.
  • Sundays 6 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.

Bootcamp classes improve fitness for all levels and experiences. RWC instructors – all of whom are Personal Training/Group Exercise and CPR/AED certified – combine elements of aerobic exercise, power training, agility and coordination, and strength training during the class. Because the class is interval training, it allows people to work at their own pace. As a note, instructors ask that all patrons bring water to these outdoor classes.

Parking Services is also expanding on the partnership by allowing students to use Garage B as an open recreation space all day on Saturday and Sunday until October 4, 2020. Students can use the garage as an open space for their workout needs, such as using the stairs, running the ramps, or simply walking around the perimeter. These functional workouts do not include equipment.

With roughly 50 group exercise classes, there are other opportunities to workout and stay physically distanced. Sunrise yoga will be offered at The William E. and Mary Jo Davis Recreation Area at Lake Claire; HIIT will be offered at the RWC Park Softball Field near Neptune housing, which is a body weight high intensity interval training class; and trail running will be offered at the Arboretum as a partnership with Outdoor Adventure.
